A detective’s worst nightmare is a serial killer who never kills the same way twice and leaves no overt links between his crimes. DCI Mark Lapslie is handed the high profile case of a murdered television newsreader despite his protests. Lapslie thinks that his superiors are trying to force him into early retirement by using his rare condition – synethesia – against him.
